ICN NT recently visited SLS Builders’ Humpty Doo headquarters, meeting Managing Director Steven Smith, Tessa Smith, General Manager Simon Donovan and the wider team to learn more about the business, its growth and the capability being developed to support projects across the Northern Territory.

Established in the Territory in 2011, SLS Builders has grown from its foundations in remote construction into a contractor delivering commercial, industrial, government and remote infrastructure projects. Steven and Tessa have been at the centre of the business from the beginning, building it together through every stage of its growth and establishing the standards, work ethic and practical approach that continue to define SLS Builders today.

A major strength of the business is the level of control it can bring to project delivery. From its Humpty Doo base, SLS operates heavy transport, earthmoving plant, concrete trucks, remote batching capability, workforce accommodation, construction equipment and project vehicles, supported by its industrial workshop and company-owned aircraft.

These resources allow SLS to manage more of the mobilisation, logistics, civil works, concrete production and construction requirements associated with difficult and remote projects, reducing reliance on external providers and improving control over delivery.

Recent projects demonstrate the breadth of this capability, including a $3.25 million remote housing program at Alpurrurulam, government and community infrastructure works across the Territory, and the off-site construction and delivery of modular commercial facilities for Department of Defence sites through Ventia.

SLS Builders continues to invest in its people, plant and facilities as it takes on larger and more complex projects, while maintaining the practical, hands-on approach that has shaped the business from the beginning.
